Cyclones split regular season finale with Eagles

A Moraine Valley base runner rounds third.

In their final regular season game, the Cyclones split their doubleheader with Illinois Valley Community College, helping solidify their berth into the playoffs.

GAME ONE
The Cyclones came up just short in their first matchup, falling 6-2.

Aiden Radtke (1-for-4, RBI) singled in the first run, but the Cyclones were unable to cross the plate after that until the seventh inning. Even in this last at-bat, Andrew Phelan (1-for-3) doubled and Aidan Roessler (1-for-2) singled before Dylan Hullinger (1-for-1, RBI) drove one more run home. However, the Cyclones were unable to move additional runners after that.

GAME TWO
Radtke (2-for-5, 4 RBIs) hit two homeruns and drove in four runs to help the Cyclones win the nightcap 12-11.

Following a seven-pitch at-bat in the top of the first, Radtke hit a homerun to bring home Valente Melero (1-for-4), who singled with two outs. Walks allowed the Eagles to get within one. However, a string of hits allowed the Cyclones to extend their lead, including a homerun from Christian Deshazer (2-for-4, 2 RBIs), RBI single from Michael Swatkowski (2-for-3, 3 RBIs) and another homerun from Radtke.

Some fielding and pitching errors along with a couple of hits from the Eagles, however, got them within one run by the bottom of the fifth. The Cyclones tacked on two more runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Deshazer and Roessler (1-for-2, 2 RBIs) followed by fielding and pitching errors from the Eagles to get the Cyclones 12 runs. Although the Eagles had a homerun with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Nathan Bucio was able to strikeout the final batter to get his team the win.

Bucio earned the win, surrendering three hits and four runs over two and one-third innings, striking out three. Carter Benoit pitched three innings in relief, allowing two runs and striking out two.

With this stretch of wins at the end of the season, the Cyclones were able to squeeze into the top 12 teams for the region playoffs. They begin competition on Friday, May 8.
