Break out the brooms because the Cyclones took two games from Highland Community College, collecting 21 runs in the effort.
GAME ONE
Jared Velez (3-for-4, 3 RBIs) was the hero in this game, hitting an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to break the tie and give the Cyclones the 6-5 victory.
Up until the top of the eighth, the Cyclones had built a 5-0 lead off two RBI singles from Valente Melero (4-for-4, 2 RBIs), a sac out from Michael Fiedor (1-for-3, RBI) and a two-run single from Velez. However, the Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the seventh after two outs on a string of hits and fielding and pitching errors by the Cyclones. However, with Aiden Radtke (2-for-3) on base from a pop fly double to right field, Velez knocked him in at his at-bat for the go-ahead run.
Ryan Burke earned the win in relief, surrendering two hits and one run over one and one-third innings while striking out two. Nathan Bucio stepped on the bump first for the Cyclones, allowing four hits while striking out five.
GAME TWO
The Cyclones collected 14 hits in their next 15-5 rout of the Cougars.
Highland led 3-2 into the top of the third inning before Radtke doubled and Michael Swatkowski and Aidan Roessler (1-for-2, 2 RBIs) walked to load the bases. A passed ball got Radtke (2-for-5, 3 RBIs) across the plate and several pitches later another wild pitch allowed Swatkowski to score for the Cyclones to take a 4-3 lead.
A big seven-run fourth inning helped put this game out of reach, however. The bases were loaded again after Fiedor (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs) and Christian Deshazer (2-for-5) singled and Melero (3-for-4, RBI) was hit by a pitch before Radtke drove home two runs on a single line drive. Velez (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) loaded the bases again with a single before Swatkowski hit a sac fly to score another run. Roessler then singled in another two runs and Andrew Phelan hit a pop fly and reached base on an error that scored a run. Joshua Keller (2-for-3, RBI) rounded out the scoring with an RBI double before the end of the inning.
Two more consistent innings of hitting while holding off the Cougars gave the Cyclones the official sweep.
Carlos Flores earned the win after throwing five innings and allowing five runs while striking out six. Michael Bielski pitched one inning in relief, allowing zero hits and striking out one.
