Saying farewell to the sophomores

A photo of graduation.

The Cyclones are bidding farewell to an extraordinary group of student-athletes, some who will continue playing sports at the next level and others who will focus on their degree or career. But all will be leaving their mark on Moraine Valley and the world.

After one season with the Cyclones, transfer basketball player Ali Oralkan made an impact. He was an all-around player with finesse on the court, showing up every day. He earned All-Conference and All-Region second team honors and finished the season ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA Division II for defensive rebounds (215) and No. 16 for total rebounds (283). He is continuing his education and basketball career at PennWest Edinboro University, an NCAA Division II college in Pennsylvania.

Rylee Milenkovic ran two years with the cross country team, transferring this spring to run track at the University of St. Francis. She earned All-Region honors the last two years, competing with her team at the NJCAA Division II Cross Country Championship.

Softball players Brooklynn Sedlak and Estelle Loth have led the way these last two years, being offensive forces and All-Conference honorees. At the plate, Loth averaged .410 with 31 RBIs and four homeruns while Sedlak collected a .368 with 37 RBIs this season. Both are looking to continue their softball careers and education at the next level.

Soccer player Heather Canny was a two-year starting forward, scoring 12 goals and collecting eight assists in the fall. She earned All-Region 4 and All-Conference first team both seasons. This spring, she transferred to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she continues to excel in the classroom.

"We are incredibly proud of our young men and women graduating with their associate's degree or transferring to four-year colleges and universities. The Athletics Department is passionate and dedicated to the success of our students in the classroom as well as in their sport. We are eager to see them succeed. This group of graduates and sophomores has proven they can yield success in both areas. We are so grateful for their contributions to Moraine Valley," said General McArthur III, Athletics director. "Many of these student-athletes are continuing their education and athletic careers at a four-year college or university, which is something we love to see. Some of them are moving on to focus on earning a degree and starting their careers, which also makes us proud. I wish them all the very best and want them to know they are always welcome to visit us anytime. Once a Cyclone, always a Cyclone."

Moraine Valley's graduation is on Friday, May 8, 2 and 6 p.m., in the Building H gym.
